I have grown up with this beautiful photograph of my mother; my inspiration for all of my life so it only seemed natural that she would be the first portrait that I would attempt.
The wonderful thing about creating a portrait of someone is that you have to get to know them at that moment in time.
To get to know my mother as a young Trinidadian woman at 19 years of age I got the chance to talk to many of my older relatives and a few of her old friends, but it was my sister who remembered the colour of the dress.
This is such a powerful thing to do, just to say hello to someone before you met them in real life, let alone your mother, it truly is a wonderful thing and if at all possible I would advise everyone to do so in whatever way you can.
After laser-printing, upon arrival, my excitement was high! Then when you see it, your breath is just taken away at the beauty of a woman that has not yet grown into the person that will nurture and protect you for most of your life.
This was beginning of my portrait journey.
I asked Sam what was gran saying to him, “I can’t remember but she always made me laugh”.
When asked what portrait would he like in his newly decorated room, he said him & grandma. Need I say more?
