Mum

I have grown up with this beautiful photograph of my mother; my inspiration for all of my life so it only seemed natural that she would be the first portrait that I would attempt.

The wonderful thing about creating a portrait of someone is that you have to get to know them at that moment in time.

To get to know my mother as a young Trinidadian woman at 19 years of age I got the chance to talk to many of my older relatives and a few of her old friends, but it was my sister who remembered the colour of the dress.

This is such a powerful thing to do, just to say hello to someone before you met them in real life, let alone your mother, it truly is a wonderful thing and if at all possible I would advise everyone to do so in whatever way you can.

After laser-printing, upon arrival, my excitement was high! Then when you see it, your breath is just taken away at the beauty of a woman that has not yet grown into the person that will nurture and protect you for most of your life.

This was beginning of my portrait journey.

To recreate my mother, I must also recreate my father

I did not know my dad when he had a gold tooth, but it was the epitome of style in the West Indies in the 50’s and 60’s!

I grew up on his stories and the amazing sporting prowess he had in Barbados.

Now I could only imagine what a power couple they were

I love the energy my father gave & I love the way he looked at my mother giving me my first lessons in love.

Sam & Grandma

I asked Sam what was gran saying to him, “I can’t remember but she always made me laugh”.
When asked what portrait would he like in his newly decorated room, he said him & grandma. Need I say more?

At 10 months, I asked my nephew to show me his favourite toys and what his favourite colour was. He showed me a large variety of toys and he told me his favourite colour was green. I put them in the artwork. I don’t think the toys or the colour survived 6 months. Luckily for me he still loves the portrait.

Shirley

What was created for me was an illustration of a portrait of my mother. It looked like her, but it didn't. It was picture of her before I was born and it always makes me pause.

I am positive I scared Gayle during the process. The journey was therapeutic because I'd recently loss my mom and everything in my life tilted. Gayle is an amazingly creative artist, a therapist and a kind spirit. Through her art she captures your heart

I receive photos of various quality, especially old black and white photos or even early-colour photos. Sometimes it can be more effective to retouch the photo to get more detail for your portrait.

But to get the true emotion and expression of the character, you have to talk to the person who knows them well and gives you the passion that helps you create a portrait with emotion.

Send a photograph; old or new, good or poor quality, choose your canvas to and help me create the effect you wish and bring your memory alive.
